A good day!

Our good friend Phil at 750mph sent through the Foley track for Act of Faith, although neither finished or mixed, it was awesome and really made a difference to the short. Our fellow Orphans Crook and Flail are also thundering though the soundscape for the film as well. Add to this a flurry of briefs coming into my agent and the offer of a documentary to be made on our film projects, and this made yesterday a good day!

I saw the latest O2 England rugby campaign we shot yesterday. It seems to be gracing a rather large number of bus shelters. It Follows on from our award winning World Cup campaign,with a further two executions waiting to go live as well. Big thanks to Jonny at VCCP for sorting a great creative brief!

I seem to be spending an unhealthy amount of time working on my film project, specifically "Act of Faith", sorting the music, Foley, discussing fonts for the titles, contemplating the Grade, the list seems to be endless. I was then reminded, whilst starring aimlessly at row upon row of negative folders in my office, that I used to take photographs. I then started to flip through the decades, coming upon this. It was to be the start of an on going project entitled "Black Squares", all to be shot on my trusted Rolliellex. Maybe its time to dust off the anachronistic artifact!

Last Week!

We spent last week going from one meeting to the next, sorting a new shoot for our epic film project and working with big D on the new live Unearthing film. We also found time to shoot Ben Youngs and Tom Wood for the new Six Nations campaign and what nice chaps they were too!

Waldo just gave me the heads up that our Treasure Island group shot is now live. It seems to have hit most of the National press today.

As of next week we are back in the saddle, loads to do to finish Act of Faith and then we start work on the rest of the epic series of films that makes up The Show! Add to that our photographic commissions, Unearthing's hard back release and live show and we should have loads to keep us busy!

Voice overs!

What a difference a voice over can make! We spent Tuesday in 750mph recording some new voice overs for Act of Faith. The actor Tom Burke helped us out, and what a performance he gave. Thank you Tom!

We have now handed the cut over to our musicians and fellow Orphans, Adam Drucker and Andy Broder to work their magic! Still lots to do but everything moving in the right direction.

I got a call on Thursday of last week, informing me that we had won the Celebrity Ad campaign of the year, along with coming 3rd place in the overall Ad campaign of the year. This was for our O2 Rugby World Cup series of ad's.We got the news with what seemed like perfect timing, as we were in the middle of shooting the new O2 Six Nations campaign for VCCP at the time!

We had a really productive day on Friday working with Jamie Trevill our editor. I think one more day and we should be there, at least visually. The sound design I suspect will take quite a lot longer, what with creating the Foley sound and commissioning the music.

This week is all about about shooting a new O2 campaign, before finishing the edit next week.

After spending the whole day working on archive and folio material for my new agents, we now spend another day doing more of the same and waiting for Jamie our Editor to deliver the first cut of Act of Faith.

Whilst trawling through the hard drives, I came across footage of Dark Teaser from our One shoot and footage of Palm trees. Add to this a soundtrack from In the mood for love, and me not being able to use the editing software, and this is what you get!

We are also waiting for a release date for SKY's Treasure Island campaign to go live, now that we have had sign off on the finished retouch. With this in mind I thought I would post our Period Drama image, as this has inspired various TV campaigns we have subsequently shot.

I had nearly forgotten what such things looked like. After the best part of two years I paid a visit to Metro to collect my film and contact sheets from our Act of Faith film shoot. I had dusted off the old G2 to record the making of my first film, and what a joy it was to sit down with a coffee and look through the material. It seems strange to think that I had spent the best part of 30 years doing just this, rather than sitting in front of a computer as I do now.

After getting an invite from one of my clients to attend their Summer Bash in NYC last week, I found it coincided perfectly we another meeting I had with an actor buddy, who I have been trying to get for my film. Nell my agent in NYC also managed to arrange a couple of further meetings, making what would have been a rather self indulgent trip into a fully productive one.

I was booked into the Jane Hotel in the meat packing district, which I have to say, although a tad shabby, was a great hotel and can truly recommend it. They have a rather bonkers but cool Bell Hop called Sheri Barclay, check out her web site as she is a super cool DJ too.http://sheribarclay.com/

It was then straight back within 48 hours to start work on a new ad campaign for Discovery Channel.

We are now just two and a half weeks away from principal photography for mine and Alan Moore's first film, Jimmy's End.

We got into Nice late last Monday and as usual the obliqatory PPM was to take place that night. We were there to shoot the new Mercedes camapign for BBDO China, working with Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing and racing driver Nico Rosberg. We were shooting with our old art director pals Matt and Tim, who we shot the Kobe campaign with earlier in the year.

Tuesday was scouting locations at the Negresco Hotel and the Regina, along with watching the Transporter TV series being shot from a Negresco Hotel suite window.

Wednesday was about as hectic as it could be, we had four hours with Bing Bing, and as it turned out, 34 minutes with Nico, go figure!

We spent all of Wednesday shooting the new O2 England Rugby World Cup campaign. Being just a tad Rugby obsessed, it was rather a splendid gig to have got!

Shanghai surprise!

The surprise being on arriving back in China, for the second trip in a matter of weeks, our client decided a second day of shooting would be needed, this seemed to be perfectly timed with finishing on a Tuesday, and sods law, BA don’t have a return flight on Wednesday!

On arrival, I was informed that after the obligatory PPM, which in this case, was miles from nowhere on a deserted highway, we would then head to the studio, pre lighting the next day. Etienne my French assistant flew in from Beijing and got the local crew sorted. I have to say that Central Studios in Shanghai are just so much better than whats on offer in Beijing.

The shoot was with super model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Victoria’s Secrets fame) who is starring in the soon to be launched Transformers 3!

We then spent two days shooting various set ups for the ad campaign, Rosie was great, even though her schedule was even more ”full on” than mine, having to go straight on to the TV commercial afterwards, before heading back to LA.

Shanghai, I have to say, is just so much easier on the eye than Beijing. It has managed to keep some of the older buildings, which made my enforced day off more pleasurable. Although a chance meeting with a Norwegian Diplomat was a rather surreal way to pass the afternoon too.

Then again back to the airport the following day for another 12 hour flight home!

P.S. We are now full on with pre production of mine and Alan’s fim, Jimmy’s End!

Beijing Baby!

After yet another goodbye, and a lengthy wait in the BA lounge at T5, I was on my way. Phil my Beijing agent had suggested a quick trip to China this week, to do a series of meetings after the success of the Kobe Bryant shoot, and to also shoot Wang Feng, China’s big rock star for a new car endorsment ad campaign. Arriving in Beijing was an experience, espeacially navigating my way through immigration with one of the arms from my glasses having, with perfect timing, fallen off!

The PPM commenced on arrival, whilst WanYun, Phil’s assistant sort out an optician to repair the glasses, I then discussed the shoot with the art directors and clients in my sunglasses! Further meetings continued throughout the day with newly repaired glasses (phew), it was then on to the studio to meet and greet the team, the first interlude being dinner.

With Tuesday being my only free day and having already seen the sights on a previous visit, a day trip was suggested to 798, an artists quarter of Beijing, which manages to bring together their equivalent of MOMA and Camden Market.

Great art and tat where on display in equal measure. The new Chinese artists are awesome, that said, after a visit to the Ullens Centre of Contemporay Art, the Peter Lindbergh exhibition of The Unknown / The Chinese Episode was pretty great too.

The following day it was then an early start to try and beat the Beijing traffic on the way to the studio. Mayhem caused by an ever changing creative brief ensued, but to his credit, Wang Feng kept his cool, and I also did my best to keep a smile upon my face. All said and done, we got a killer set of images.

It was then dinner with clients and a visit to the Tang Club, which I suggested to Phil was not the best choice, as not only do I not speak Chinese but my clients speak only broken English, and trying to make friendly chit chat whilst Chinese techno is pumping away in the background,is not ideal!

It was then straight to the airport yesterday morning for yet another 11 hour flight.

It was great to get the team back together today, it has been ages. I seem to have spent the last six months working abroad, a lot of the time with either my LA team or complete strangers!

A long day coming!

We deliver Unearthing to our publishers on Monday! All the team have been working flat out this week to finish all the final tweaks.

With the demise of my old agency Orchard, the last month has been a bit of a vacuum. What with sorting new agents and the folio hell that goes with this, but light is now on view at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness!

The Peter Bailey Company are now representing me both here and in the US, along with the same guys in Beijing, Berlin and Paris. Add to this the new Film and Music agency, Double by Getty, and it seems we have most areas now covered (Phew!).

It's been a week or so since I got back from the Kobe Bryant shoot. So much is happening so fast, what with changing agents and keeping up to speed with with all the film developments, I seem to be all over the place with the blog. Here is a shot I took on Sunset Blvd of my Breakout Kings poster. I am told that the campaign is huge with the whole of Grand Central Station NYC taken over with ad's from the campaign as well. As soon as I can get shots of this I will post them.

Treasure Island revisited

Having had Leo asking when the Puerto Rico shots will finally be up on the blog, it seems that I have run out of excuses!

The discovery of treasure whilst on the beach

came as a thrill to me, Steve, Leo and Chris!

Kobe Bryant and La La land

Now back from what turned out to be a jet lagged week, never quite being able to shake it off. We got to LA to find that our location was a tent (alright, Marquee) at a hotel in Newport Beach. Kobe doesn't like to travel, so this was the best option that my uber LA producer Brenda could come up with. We spent a day and half pre lighting for a car shot, action shot and portrait. Our LA team of assistants, lead by Jackson managed to to make it work (in a tent)!

We spent all day Monday in the studio working on our new project with art director Paul Chessell and artist and pornographer Melinda Gebbie. A very strange and wonderful day it was. Special thanks to Khandi, DT, John, Rosie and Boy Kitten.

Further instalments from the Treasure Island adventure to follow, but time does not seem to be on our side at present. Off to LA on Tuesday, on return we will endeavour to get everything up to date.

Treasure Island part 1

The first day in Puerto Rico revealed two things, firstly I hadn't packed any underpants (more on this later) and secondly, our deserted tropical beach location, was one hell of a walk from where we could park the tour bus, and that, was after an hours drive from the hotel!

Steve and Leo rose to the challenge, carrying all the gear the couple of miles across the sand. We later found an access road a couple of hundred yards from the location on our second visit (oops).

To remind us of the long walk, Leo shot this film, set to our new theme tune, enjoy!

After the best part of the last two weeks away in Puerto Rico, we are back. We were shooting the new ad campaign for SKY ONE's Treasure Island, with Eddie Izzard and Elijah Wood to name but a few (see SKY's link http://tv.sky.com/elijah-wood-joins-sky1s-treasure-island ).

Over the next few days we will sort the footage and stills for the blog.

I just got these sent to me from my NYC agent, it seems that the Breakout Kings ad's are starting to hit the press, these are from Vanity Fair.

Fellow Orphan and Uber designer/art director Mark Millington, is now just crossing the T's and dotting the I's for both the Coffee Table version of Unearthing and the paper back version. Both our publishers Lex and Top Shelf will be happy!

Both myself and Orphan Damien Wasylki, who finishes filming the Usher tour next month, start editing the Unearthing film thereafter.

I have finally found this video I directed for Red Lorry Yellow Lorry 23 years ago! Me, Barry Hale (producer) and my great friend Graham Trott (cameraman), kept our actor buddy Robert Goodman up for 24 hours, made him smoke like a trooper and drink copious amounts of Tequila. Channel 4 banned it at the time, as they thought the salt he was licking could be construed as coke, go figure!

We are now working with Robert Goodman two decades later, as the star of the Unearthing book and possibly another even bigger project.

I just loved making this. You would never have thought I had watched Erazerhead!

So, our great art director buddy Paul Chessell and myself spent an evening last month being interviewed for Soho House Magazine, Alan picked up the phone and had a chat too.

The most fun was had trying to shoot a self portrait at Jimmy's End Working Men's Club. You would have thought an art director and photographer would have nailed the shot first time? As it was, it took about half an hour, that said, we got there in the end.

As Alan and I move forward with our film projects, I thought it would be a good idea to commission our film company ident. Our resident genius animator Yu Sato, has worked his magic on our idea. The soundtrack is by our fellow orphans, Crook and Flail aka Adam Drucker and Andy Broder.

BREAKOUT KINGS part 2

Leo and I have finally managed to put together some snaps from the tour along with our time lapse footage. This was shot over three days in Studio 1 at Pinewood Studio's Toronto. Our DOP Sam Goldie had also taken over Studio 9, where we were shooting the On Air idents for the show with JD from A&E. We are really looking forward to getting this edited and graded. Post production for the print campaign continues at a pace!

Just to warn you, the time lapse comes in at 9 minutes, so grab a cup of tea, sit back and get bored!

P.S. We seem to have failed to get any shots of our GREAT Toronto producers Julie and Raff, oops!

BREAKOUT KINGS Part 1 (The Names Hardman)

We just got back from a week in Toronto, shooting the new campaign for A&E's BREAKOUT KINGS, their new original drama scheduled for release early 2011.

Leo and Steve still found time to record their homage to 007's opening sequence at Toronto's Pinewood Studio's.

Loads more to follow in part 2, we just need to sort the material first.

Hectic Times

We spent all day Tuesday in the Studio with Alan, recording for Jimmy's End. We now have Kristian our Scandinavian illustrator working flat out to visualise mine and Alan's storyboard, this is looking awesome. Thanks again to our buddies at Lex Records for hooking us up with such a talented individual!

Here we are at the AOP last week. Our Burlesque documentary set for Dodgem Logic got us into the book and Exhibition. This is the third year running we have done this, but as of yet, we have yet to win!

It's been hectic after getting back from NYC. We are are now flat out on Jimmy's End our new multi media Project, no doubt tempting fate with Unearthing the book only 99% finished!

We are hoping to be working with a Finnish illustrator on the visualisation of mine and Alan Moore's storyboard, this guy is cool, more details when the deal is done.

Rain and NYC

Mr and Mr Hipstamatic arrived to a rainy day in New York. We were shooting Jenny Allen for a new campaign with Ogilvy at Hudson Studios. Jenny, fresh from her one woman show "I got sick then I got better" was on top form and a splendid day was had by all. This time my team stayed at home and my NYC agent and producer arranged for a new team on my arrival, all very strange, that said, Kevin, Victor and Carlos did a sterling job. As usual, spent some of the time snapping away with the Hipstamatic only to have Victor recommend the TiltShift Generator! It seems for the next trip Mr T will be accompanying us.

I have just noticed on Jay's web site, that he has released the cover art for his next album "Rock Dust Light Star" which we shot at the Carhaix gig in France over the summer.

It would also seem that Matias Mazzoni, a fan from Argentina, has taken issue with the image choice and thinks that it isn't the best shot of Jay that he has seen, hey ho!

Once the Album has had it worldwide release on November 1st, we will be able to post some of the many images from the shoot, at this point, I hope Matias will be a lot happier?

So much going on at the moment, just waiting for the shoots to get published before we can share them. Mr Hipstamatic goes on tour to NYC on Monday.

Unearthing Cactus seeds!

At last our Cactus seeds have arrived. These are our little tribute to Chris Moore (Steve's brother) who passed away whilst we were still working on our Unearthing shoots. I think we all will be planting these over the coming days.

We finished shooting our screen test last week and I have to say that everyone concerned did a great job.

Alan and I are now sorting the storyboard, with any luck we should be going into pre production of our first film in the coming weeks!

Dodgem Logic issue 5

Hi Folks,

On arriving back from a not too sunny California, I found the latest issue of DL waiting for me. For this issue me and the team along with Paul Chessell our great art director buddy, joined forces to shoot a series of portraits of local residents from Spring Boroughs (a deprived area of Northampton). We shot and designed the spread to look like a Vanity Fair Hollywood issue, our reasoning being, that anyone can be a star! We had a real blast shooting the set over two days in June. Alan being Alan decided to write the whole article in Heroic Couplets!

Great review and possibly album of the year (that's what the NME said)?

Well, we have done it, the Unearthing live shows finished last night to great applause!!! Two sell out shows, a great first review and amazing performances by Alan and the musicians Adam and Andy aka Crook and Flail and Jeff. I even managed to get all my images in sync by the second performance! A big thanks to everyone at Lex Records, Tom Panton, Viv at the Old Vic, Mark Millington, D and of course Paul Chessell!
